United States Department of the Navy

The U.S. Navy is comprised of more than 500,000 Sailors and civilians, nearly 300 ships and submarines, and more than 3,700 aircraft. Our Sailors serve on the water (aboard ships); under the water (aboard submarines); over the water (in planes and helicopters) and away from the water (ashore in the U.S. and around the world). What happens on the water affects us all. To understand the impact the U.S. Navy makes in our daily lives, think of the 70-80-90 rule. Seventy percent of the earth is covered by water, 80 percent of the earth`s population lives near the ocean, and 90 percent of international trade travels by sea. The U.S. Navy meets threats far away, so those threats cannot harm our citizens at home. They protect and defend freedom around the world and also offer opportunities for a great career.

Town of South Hill

It is one of only three towns in the nation to be originally planned and developed in a circular pattern, extending 5/8 mile in all directions from a center point. We`re a thriving, rapidly-growing community located in Mecklenburg County in south-central Virginia near the North Carolina state line halfway between the state capitals of Richmond, VA and Raleigh, NC (80 miles each).   It is also about halfway between the Atlantic Ocean (on the east) and the Blue Ridge Mountains (on the west). Get directions.   The Town is in the Eastern Standard time zone, at latitude 36.726 N. and longitude 78.129 W. Our convenient location makes it easy to reach popular destinations such as Historic Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Washington, DC.   Since its beginning as a railroad town in 1889, South Hill has continued to be known for its ideal location. Today, the Town is easily accessible by a highway network consisting of Interstate 85, U.S. Route 58, U.S. Route 1 and Highway 47. South Hill is also only six miles away from the Mecklenburg-Brunswick Regional Airport.   Incorporated by the Virginia General Assembly on February 16, 1901, South Hill has always been known for its tobacco industry, and the Town is presently the third largest market in Virginia. But over the past few years, a significant growth in manufacturing and trade has diversified the Town`s economy.   The Town`s growth is enhanced by its proximity to two nearby lakes, Kerr Lake (Buggs Island Lake) and Lake Gaston, both of which are created by the John H. Kerr Dam, which generates an average of 426,749,000 kilowatt hours per year. With over 1,150 combined miles of shoreline, tourist trade and a booming real estate market serve to fuel our Town`s growth.

Military Health System

On the battlefield, every element of the Military Health System comes together to make the difference between life and death. Army, Navy and Air Force medical professionals help ensure those in uniform are medically ready to deploy anywhere around the globe on a moment's notice. And these medical professionals are also ready to go with them. There isn’t another military medical force like it in the world—with the expertise, the assets and the global reach of our health system. The Military Health System, however, is more than combat medicine. It’s a complex system that weaves together health care delivery, medical education, public health, private sector partnerships and cutting edge medical research and development. Exemplified by personal courage and a drive for excellence, the Military Health System is changing how health care is delivered throughout the United States and the world.
