Research areas include Biosciences, Computing Sciences, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Energy Sciences, Energy Technologies, and Physical Sciences. 13 scientists associated with Berkeley Lab have won the Nobel Prize. Fifty-seven Lab scientists are members of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), one of the highest honors for a scientist in the United States. Nye County is a county located in the U.S. state of Nevada. As of the 2010 census, the population was 43,946. The genesis of the National Communications System (NCS) began in 1962 after the Cuban missile crisis when communications problems among the United States, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and foreign heads of state threatened to complicate the crisis further.
