Samuel A. Nixon Jr. was reappointed Chief Information Officer (CIO) of the Commonwealth by Governor Terry McAuliffe. Prior to this appointment, he was Virginia's first CIO to be appointed by the former Governor Bob McDonnell under new legislation passed by the 2010 General Assembly. As CIO, he also serves as head of the Virginia Information Technologies Agency (VITA) and oversees the information technology infrastructure (IT) transformation partnership with Northrop Grumman. Prior to his appointment as CIO, Sam served nine terms beginning in 1994 in the Virginia House of Delegates representing central and northeast Chesterfield County. He served as chair of the House Republican Caucus from 2008 until his appointment as CIO. Sam has more than 25 years of private sector IT business experience. He was senior consultant with CapTech Ventures, an IT and management consulting firm based in Richmond, where he utilized his skills in project management, business process re-engineering and change management for Fortune 100 clients. A native of Martinsville, Sam is a graduate of James Madison University and holds a bachelor of business administration degree in marketing. He and his wife, Carol Gibbs Nixon, originally from Dinwiddie, have one son, Johnathan, who attends Christopher Newport University and is in the President's Leadership Program. Sam is an avid photographer and motorsports fan. He serves on the St. Francis Hospital Community Advisory Board and is a life member of the Chesterfield Jaycees
