About the Person

Guido Appenzeller, Ph.D. Co-founded Big Switch Networks Inc. in 2010 and has been its Chief Technology Officer since November 2013. Mr. Appenzeller served as Chief Executive Officer of Big Switch Networks Inc. until November 2013 and also served as its President. Mr. Appenzeller is an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Morgenthaler. He specializes in information technology at the firm. Dr. Appenzeller is a Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer at Voltage Security in Silicon Valley. He has over a decade of computer science, security, innovative networking technologies, and e-commerce experience. Dr. Appenzeller is heavily involved in the Clean Slate Program and the emerging OpenFlow standard. Previously, he was an Associate at Kappa IT Ventures and worked at McKinsey & Company (German office). Dr. Appenzeller also served as the Chief Technology Officer and Vice President at the Business Association of Stanford Students (BASES). He co-founded Voltage Security, where Dr. Appenzeller served as a founding Board Member, Chief Technology officer, and Engineering Manager. Dr. Appenzeller helped grow the company to over 400 enterprise customers and over 1 million licensed users. He has held numerous academic and entrepreneurial positions. Dr. Appenzeller is a Member of Advisory Board at Earlybird Venture Capital GmbH & Co. KG. He was named to the 2004 list of the world's 100 Top Young Innovators by Technology Review, MIT's Magazine of Innovation. Dr. Appenzeller was named a Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum in 2006. He was nominated as a Global Top Tech Pioneer in 2005 by the World Economic Forum in Davos. Dr. Appenzeller is also the author of over 20 peer-reviewed journal and conference publications. He holds over 15 issued or pending patents and is a frequent invited speaker on topics such as encryption and security. He serves as a Director of Big Switch Networks Inc. Dr. Appenzeller is a Consulting Assistant Professor at Stanford University in the Computer Systems Lab. He holds an M.S. in Computer Science in 2000 and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University. Dr. Appenzeller holds an undergraduate degree in Physics, magna cum laude, from the University of Karlsruhe, Karlsruhe, Germany in 1996.
