About the Person

Raymond J. Kilmer serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer (CTO), roles he has held since April 2011. He has oversight for Arconic’s corporate research and development including leading the Arconic Technology Center (ATC), the world’s largest light metals research facility. Ray is also a member of the Arconic Executive Council, which sets strategic priorities for the corporation, reporting to CEO Klaus Kleinfeld.     Areas of research under Ray’s leadership include additive manufacturing; materials, alloy and process development; coatings technology; molten metal and casting technologies, new product development; automation and robotics; and connecting to new partners via ventures programs. Additionally, he has responsibility for the P&L management for Arconic’s standards business.   Ray joined Alcoa in 1998 as the Manager of the Brazing Sheet Development Factory and Director of Marketing, Brazing Sheet and Heat Exchanger Extrusions in Lancaster, PA.  He was promoted to Global Commercial Director of the Automotive Flat Rolled Products Business, based in Detroit, and then became Vice President of the Global Rolled Products Engineering and Technology organization. He was Chairman of the Technology Management Review Board for Global Rolled Products and had overarching responsibility for the rolling mill portion of the Alcoa-Ma’aden project, which broke ground in April 2011. Before becoming CTO, Ray was Vice President Technology Development and Deployment at the Alcoa Technical Center.    Earlier in his career, Ray worked for General Motors as plant metallurgist and assistant superintendent of Advanced Manufacturing Engineering.    Ray received a BS degree in metallurgical engineering from Purdue University and obtained an M.S. and Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Virginia.  He is the recipient of the University of Virginia Sigma Xi Outstanding Ph.D. Award.  He holds over 50 U.S. and international patents.    Ray is a member of the Board of Directors for ExOne, a leader in additive manufacturing equipment and serves on the Board of Trustees for the School of Engineering and Applied Science, University of Virginia. He was recently Vice Chairman of the Virginia Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CCAM).
