At the Obama Foundation, we are guided by a core belief: that ordinary people working together can change history. Our mission is to inspire those people to take action, empower them to change their world for the better, and connect them so they can achieve more together than they can alone. We were founded by community organizers, so when we seek change, we do it by bringing people together. That approach begins at home, on the South Side of Chicago, where we are building the Obama Presidential Center. The Center represents a historic opportunity for Chicago: a chance to build a world-class museum and public gathering space that celebrates our nation`s first African American President and First Lady, steps away from where he began his career, where she was raised, and where—together—they made their home. But that approach extends to all our work, whether it`s holding leadership training sessions in communities throughout the U.S., bringing local leaders together in countries around the world, working to support the global education of girls, or ensuring young men of color have pathways to opportunity. Lighthouse Youth Services is a multiservice agency providing social services to children, youth and families in southwestern Ohio. Operating since 1969, Lighthouse is nationally recognized as an innovator in services for families in crisis, for homeless youth and young adults, for youth learning to become self-sufficient, and in foster care for abused or neglected children. Lighthouse operates the area`s only direct access, around the clock sanctuary for homeless, abused, neglected or abandoned youth; the only state-supported private juvenile corrections program for serious juvenile felons; and is the largest provider of foster care in Hamilton County. In all, Lighthouse operates 19 different programs, including a charter school. At any given time there are over 550 children, youth and families in Lighthouse residential care. Each day Lighthouse staff members serve over 2,000 children and families through its community based services. Last year, the agency served over 5,000 young people and families. Central to their lives are concerns about homelessness, hunger, loneliness and safety.
Originally founded in 1977 as Centro Las Americas by Puerto Ricans to serve Puerto Ricans, CENTRO’s mission and the community it serves has evolved. It was quickly realized that all Latinos in the area could benefit from the services offered by CENTRO. That mission has evolved further as we serve individuals and families from North, Central, and South America. We also serve people from the African Continent, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.
