About the Person

Glen H. Johnson, a member of the Senior Executive Service, was appointed Acting Deputy Chief Information Officer and Chief Technology Officer for the U.S. Department of State on August 1, 2012, and was confirmed on April 17, 2013. As the Deputy Chief Information Officer (DCIO), he is responsible for overseeing worldwide information technology operations including digital networks, computers, software development, equipment modernization, data center consolidation, telephones and radios. Prior to assuming the DCIO position, he was the Director of the Department’s Messaging Systems Office and has served in a number of management positions in Washington, including the State Messaging and Archive Retrieval Toolset (SMART), the Defense Trade Export Licensing system, and the U.S. Arms Control Data Repository. During his career, he also received numerous awards for effective leadership and management of complex technical projects, including a Presidential Senior Executive Service Award, and four superior honor awards. Dr. Johnson earned his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland in International Security Studies and Computer Science, and holds a Master’s Degree in Latin American Studies and Quantitative Research Methods and an undergraduate degree in Political Science from Brigham Young University.
