Neighborhood Councils were mandated by the new Los Angeles City Charter in June of 1999. They were created to give neighborhoods a voice in policy making and influence over the way government does business. The Neighborhood Council system is already having an effect. To date, 95 Neighborhood Councils have been certified. If you live, work, own property or participate in any significant way in the Mid City West area, you are automatically a member stakeholder in the MCW. Mid City West is funded by the City, as provided in the Charter, and charged with the responsibility of advising city departments, agencies, boards and commissions on matters of importance to our community, with providing input in the Mayor's budget process and with monitoring the delivery of city services. Mid City West is your voice at City Hall and responds to and considers the myriad issues that impact and concern our community ... both local and citywide. The MCW Board of Directors is the governing body for this Council. It consists of 45 seats, 31 of which are community interest positions such as Renters, Homeowners, Nonprofits, Minorities, Education, etc. MCW is committed to, and its bylaws require, transparency and openness. Any stakeholder can run for the Board of Directors. All board and standing committee meetings are posted and open to the public. The Board must reflect the community, and no single group, organization or individual will be permitted to control your Council.
The Department of the Secretary of State touches the lives of virtually every Maine resident. From safeguarding the original Maine State Constitution and preserving millions of precious historic documents, to conducting state elections and testing motor vehicle operators, the broad array of Department functions is unusual and interesting. In Maine, the Secretary of State oversees one cohesive Department made up of three distinct bureaus: the Maine State Archives, the Bureau of Corporations, Elections and Commissions (CEC), and the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV). As a Constitutional Officer, the Secretary is elected biennially through joint ballot of the Maine State Legislature, and is charged with carrying out the Department`s diverse responsibilities and unique mission. Because customer service and government efficiency are top priorities, the Department is recognized as a leader in the effort to enhance access to information and services through the use of technology. With more than 20 online services already in place, the Department of the Secretary of State is demonstrating the exciting possibilities for making e-Government services available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Through a partnership with the Information Resource of Maine (InforME), new online services are being launched on a regular basis. Importantly, the Department takes its responsibilities in the area of elections and civic education very seriously. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is an independent agency that was established by the Energy Reorganization Act of 1974 and began operations in 1975. NRC`s mission is to license and regulate the Nation`s civilian use of radioactive materials to provide reasonable assurance of adequate protection of public health and safety and to promote the common defense and security and to protect the environment. In carrying out its mission it exercises the following vision: Demonstrate the Principles of Good Regulation (independence, openness, efficiency, clarity, and reliability) in performing our mission. NRC`s scope of responsibility includes: the regulation of commercial nuclear power plants, research and test reactors, nuclear fuel cycle facilities, medical, academic, and industrial uses of radioactive materials; the decommissioning of these facilities and sites; and, the transport, storage, and disposal of radioactive materials and wastes. NRC issues licenses for civilian uses of radioactive materials, oversees the licensees, and certifies standard nuclear reactor designs and spent fuel storage casks and transportation packages. It also licenses the import and export of radioactive materials; participates in international nuclear activities, including multilateral and bilateral safety and security activities; and works closely with its international counterparts to enhance nuclear safety and security worldwide. To accomplish its overall mission NRC has identified two Strategic Goals—To ensure the safe and secure use of radioactive materials. We need a wide variety of administrative and technical staff to accomplish our objectives. We hire engineers, scientists, security specialists, information technology professionals, financial analysts, and a range of other occupations.
