The Town of Littleton was founded in 1714 and is governed by an Open Town Meeting / Board of Selectmen / Town Administrator form of government. The Town provides general governmental services for the territory within its boundaries, including police and fire protection, solid waste transfer station, a library, street maintenance, and parks and recreational facilities. Water and electric services are supplied by the Town of Littleton Electric Light and Water Departments. Public education in grades K-12 is provided by the Littleton School Department at two elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school.
The Town is eight miles long, two miles wide at its South end and three miles wide at the North end with an area of 18.55 square miles. It is surrounded by seven Massachusetts towns and Woonsocket, Rhode Island to its South end.
