About the Person

Avi Bender is a customer focused executive with both commercial and federal experience in driving business transformation through IT modernization. In the private sector, Avi provided IT Strategy consulting to Fortune 500 companies, and led product development and vendor management alliance programs. Avi has held executive level positions at IBM Media and Entertainment Global Consulting, Price Waterhouse Entertainment,Media, and Communications, GTE (Verizon), and was a cofounder of a startup. Within the federal sector, Avi was appointed to a four year term as the Director for Enterprise Architecture at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) where he transformed the practice of EA into a business enabling process for IT modernization. Avi Bender is the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at the U.S. Census Bureau. In this newly created position, Avi is responsible for establishing a business driven technology modernization program to promote innovation, and to create an enterprise architecture and governance process that informs and guides technology investment decisions. Avi led the successful creation of the Census Bureau Center for Applied Technology (CAT) that has significantly expanded both collaboration and innovation at the Bureau in the areas of data management, infrastructure and architecture, mobile computing, social media, and open data in support of the Federal Digital Strategy. Avi has been instrumental in recruiting and mentoring high performance teams that are embedded in business units to deliver value in process transformation. Avi was the recipient of the Government Innovator of the year award in 2013.
