Catawba County, North Carolina, is located in the western part of the State in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It was established on December 12, 1842 and, on January 8, 1845, Newton was selected as the County seat. It was one of the first counties of the 100 counties in North Carolina to adopt the county manager form of government (March 1, 1937). The Board of Commissioners has five members elected on an at-large basis to staggered four year terms.

Tri-Rail is Southeast Florida`s commuter rail line, which extends 72 miles from Miami to Mangonia Park with a total of 18 stations. The name refers to the three counties through which the line passes: Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach. It is operated by the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority, an agency of the State of Florida. Tri-Rail had its origins when, in 1989 it began to operate as a temporary commuter rail service while construction crews widened Interstate 95 and the parallel Florida`s Turnpike. In 2003, the Florida Legislature transformed the Tri-County Commuter Rail Authority (Tri-Rail) into the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA). The Authority was created with a vision to provide greater mobility in South Florida, thereby improving the economic viability and quality of life of the community, region and state. The Authority`s mission is to coordinate, develop and implement a viable regional transportation system in South Florida that endeavors to meet the desires and needs for the movement of people, goods and services. The SFRTA currently operates Tri-Rail, which spans Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties. Additional regional services may be added in the future. Hammond’s stability is directly tied to its livability. In addition to economic factors, people are always searching for the intangible but important “quality of life” aspect of a community when choosing a place to call home. Since I’ve been Mayor, Hammond’s quality of life has improved, and will continue to improve. Hammond is blessed to be located on Lake Michigan, but until fairly recently, that view was primarily an industrial view. Only recently have family friendly and ecologically appropriate improvements have been made to Hammond’s lakefront property with an aim towards preservation as well as enjoyment. The brand new pavilion on Wolf Lake not only beautifies the shores, but provides entertainment and cultural opportunities for Hammond’s families year round. The City of Hammond also supports educational opportunities and choices with a state of the art Charter School as well as the College Bound program which insures that Hammond’s best minds have a chance to succeed regardless of family income. Hammond, under my administration also continues to encourage and promote economic development. Hammond encourages existing business to put their best face forward by way of the façade rebate program and continues to work to beautify the gateways leading into our beautiful City.
