About the Person

Timothy Stettheimer, Ph.D. serves as senior vice-president and chief information officer for St. Vincent's Health System in Birmingham, Alabama. St. Vincent's Health System includes four acute care hospitals and one ambulatory facility and is part of St. Louis based Ascension Health. In addition to his CIO duties at St. Vincent's Health System, Dr. Stettheimer also holds the title of Regional Chief Information Officer for Ascension Health. His regional leadership includes responsibility for hospitals in Nashville (TN), Birmingham (AL), Mobile (AL), Pensacola (FL), Destin (FL) and Jacksonville (FL). Among Dr. Stettheimer's hospitals is St. Vincent's – Birmingham a multi-year ""Most Wired"" winner. St. Vincent's leads Ascension Health as well as the industry in the use of innovative and enabling technology such as robotic surgery, pervasive mobile and context aware computing, integrated clinical repositories and electronic patient records. At St. Vincent's Health System, Dr. Stettheimer has responsibility for strategic and tactical information technology initiatives, as well as alliances and partnerships with external companies to support information initiatives. His participation with ministry activities supports health system level initiatives to fulfill Ascension Health's Call to Action for Healthcare that is Safe and Healthcare that Works. Dr. Stettheimer is a Fellow with both the College for Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) and the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE). He is also certified as a professional in healthcare information management systems (CPHIMS) as a member of the Healthcare Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS). In 2005, Dr. Stettheimer was named the John E. Gall Jr. CIO of the Year by CHIME and HIMSS. He was also recognized as a Medical Informatics Fellow under a National Institute of Health Grant (1993-1995) during his doctoral studies. He holds faculty positions with the University of North Texas and the University of Phoenix where he teaches Master's and Doctoral classes in information systems and medical informatics. Dr. Stettheimer previously served as a regional information services executive in Fort Worth, Texas for Florida-based Adventist Health System. His Ph.D. was earned from the University of North Texas, focused in the field of medical informatics. Dr. Stettheimer has served as a member of the McKesson Strategic Advisory Council, Adobe Corporation's CIO Council and the Editorial Advisory Board for Advance for Healthcare Information Executives. He has also previously served on the HP Healthcare Executive Council and on the Advisory Board for The Emerging Technologies and Healthcare Innovations Conference. Dr. Stettheimer has delivered presentations on diverse healthcare technology topics and is frequently quoted and published in national trade publications. Dr. Stettheimer has earned the Certified Healthcare CIO distinction from the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME). He also served as the CHIME 2010 Board Chair and currently serves as the 2011 CHIME Foundation Board Chair.
