About the Person

Tom Murphy serves as the VP for information technology and university CIO at the University of Pennsylvania. In this capacity, he is responsible for the University’s central IT organization, information systems and computing, which is comprised of 300+ staff members who plan for, acquire, develop, and support core infrastructure and enterprise-wide products and services. Murphy has more than 20 years of knowledge and experience in information systems and telecommunications within large corporate environments. Prior to joining Penn, he served as the CIO of DaVita HealthCare Partners, where he was responsible for all IT supporting the company’s business and clinical operations. Prior to his tenure with Davita, Murphy was the SVP and CIO of AmerisourceBergen. Murphy is the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions, including but not limited to: being recognized as a ‘Top Ten Breakaway Leader’ at the 2011 Global CIO Executive Summit; selection as a Top CIO of 2011 by SmartCEO Magazine; election to the CIO Hall of Fame in 2010; recognized as one of the Best CIOs in America in 2010 by Business Trends Quarterly; recognized as one of the ‘Top Ten Global CIOs for Leadership & Innovation’ in 2009; selection as one of the Premier 100 IT Leaders of 2002 by ComputerWorld; and recognition as one of the top 100 Innovators of 2001 by CIO Magazine.
