About the Person
In his more than 20 years with the company, Steve has provided invaluable technical expertise and leadership that has led to major victories for Cummins. Charlton joined Cummins in 1993 as the Director of Advanced Engineering, working on the early plans for the V-8 light-duty diesel engine. He became Executive Director, Research in 1999 and was named Executive Director, Advanced Engineering in 2001. In 2004, Charlton was appointed technical leader on the project to develop the Heavy Duty Engine products to meet the 2007 EPA emissions standards. He was named Vice President – Heavy Duty Engineering in 2008 and went on to become Vice President and CTO for the Engine Business in 2010, the role he holds today. Charlton had many significant contributions during his career at Cummins. Leading up to the challenging 2002 EPA emissions standards, Charlton was instrumental in the research and technology work to develop the cooled-EGR engine technology, which allowed Cummins to meet the standards on time. As Program Leader for the 2007 ISM and ISX VPI Teams, Charlton focused on driving common architecture across different platforms to leverage our product development resources to solve emerging issues. And as Vice President – Heavy Duty Engineering, his team was critical to the adoption of the SCR technology for the 2010 products, which provided better performance, reliability and durability. Prior to joining Cummins Steve worked as an engineer at the General Electric Company in the United Kingdom and also taught engineering at Staffordshire University and the University of Bath. He earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Staffordshire University in the U.K. and a doctorate in mechanical engineering from the University of Aston. Outside of the company, he was elected a Fellow by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) in 2005 and the Institute of Mechanical Engineers in London in 2009. Charlton was awarded an honorary doctorate in engineering from the University of Bath in recognition for his leadership in engine technology. Charlton and his wife Kathy have been married for 42 years and they have two children and two grandchildren
