Houston, TX-based University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Appointed Ryan Walsh as Chief Medical Information Officer
The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), primarily a graduate education university, educates the largest number of health care professionals in Texas. Created in 1972 by the UT System Board of Regents, UTHealth is located in the Texas Medical Center. UTHealth includes the schools of dentistry, biomedical informatics, medicine, nursing and public health, and the graduate school of biomedical sciences. UTHealth is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award certificate, bachelor`s, master`s, doctoral and professional degrees. Three UTHealth faculty practices treat patients in a variety of Houston-area clinics: UT Physicians, UT Dentists and UT Health Services.
Prior to his appointment, Dr. Walsh was senior physician executive for the system. UTHealth officials created the position to maximize the university`s investment in EHRs, according to a statement. His duties will include working closely with UT Physicians, the faculty group medical practice at UT Health`s Medical School, as it goes through the process of purchasing a new health information system. Additionally, Dr. Walsh will coordinate IT initiatives with the UTHealth vice president and CIO, Rick Miller. Before joining UTHealth, Dr. Walsh held medical information management positions, including CMIO, with UnityPoint Health Methodist in Peoria, Ill. Ryan Walsh received his undergraduate degree in biology at St. Louis University, where he lettered in cross country, and his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Peoria, Ill. He is currently completing a Master of Medical Management from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. He is a member of the American Medical Informatics Association, the American Association for Physician Leadership and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society. Walsh and his wife, Kerry Hincks, D.O., have two children: Ally, 9; and Maddie, 7.
