Lincoln, NE-based University of Nebraska has Appointed Rodney Markin as Chief Technology Officer

Dr. Markin is Associate Vice Chancellor for Business Development and Chief Technology Officer at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and a Professor of Pathology and Microbiology; David T. Purtillo Distinguished Professor Pathology and Microbiology and Courtesy Professor of Surgery. Dr. Markin received his Bachelor's degree in chemistry with a minor in mathematics and physics at Nebraska Wesleyan University in 1977 and his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.-biochemistry) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1980. He earned his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (Omaha) in 1983 and completed his residency in pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 1986. After completing his residency, Dr. Markin joined UNMC as Acting Director of Clinical Chemistry for the Department of Pathology and Microbiology. After serving in that post for five months, Dr. Markin was named Director of Clinical Chemistry and Associate Director of the Regional Laboratory Section of the Department of Pathology and Microbiology. His career has included a variety of leadership roles in Pathology and Microbiology, including 10 years as vice chair of the department. At the same time, he rose in ranks as a UNMC faculty member, being promoted to full professor in 1992 and was named the David T. Purtillo Distinguished Professor of Pathology and Microbiology in 2005. In addition to his responsibilities in Pathology and Microbiology, Dr. Markin was Interim Dean for the College of Medicine for fiscal year 2010-2011. Prior to his position as Interim Dean, Dr. Markin also took on clinical leadership responsibilities with both UNMC faculty group practice plan and the College of Medicine. In 1997, he was named President and CEO of UNMC Physicians and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs for the UNMC College of Medicine. In 2006, he was promoted to Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs. Under his leadership, UNMC Physicians has seen tremendous growth in physicians, staff and patient visits. Board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, Dr. Markin's professional and academic research interests have focused on solid organ transplantation, informatics and clinical laboratory automation, which include but are not limited to, robotics, information systems, medical utilization management and outcomes optimization. Dr. Markin founded LAB-InterLink, a technology transfer company of the University of Nebraska Medical Center that provided products for hospital-based laboratory automation systems. He also developed an automated microbiology platform for U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (Award Number: W81XWH-04-1-0910). He has 16 patents, has more than 300 publications and has published nearly 200 abstracts and chapters in books. He is a member of the following associations: Association for Laboratory Automation (ALA); United States and Canadian Academy of Pathologists (USCAP); American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP); College of American Pathologists (CAP); American Association for Cancer Research (AACR); American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC); American Chemical Society (ACS); American College of Gastroenterology (ACG); American Association for Advancement of Science (AAAS); Binford-Damin Infectious Disease Society; and Nebraska Association of Pathologists (NAP). He is a reviewer for a variety of journals and serves on the editorial boards of six journals. Dr. Markin also serves on the board of directors of Nebraska Health Partners, Transgenomic, Inc. and Prairie Ventures.
