Robert Mandelbaum most recently served as a program manager at Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). In that role, he managed programs in the Information Processing Techniques, Tactical Technologies, and Transformational Convergence Technology offices. He managed a wide variety of DARPA programs, including BigDog, a robot that broke the world autonomous legged distance record by walking 12.8 miles on varied terrain. Mandelbaum's industry experience includes service as director of the Commercial Vision business unit at Sarnoff Corporation. He was also the founder and lead of the Robot and Automotive Vision Group, and a program manager for the Vision Technologies Laboratory. In addition to his government and industry experience, Mandelbaum was on the faculty of the Computer and Information Sciences Department at the University of Pennsylvania. As an adjunct assistant professor in the Computer and Information Sciences Department at the University of Pennsylvania, Mandelbaum taught a graduate level seminar course on “Computer Vision for Robotics Platforms.” Mandelbaum holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. He holds a master’s degree and doctorate in computer and information science from the University of Pennsylvania, where he also completed the executive development program at the Wharton Business School.
