Since Self-Help`s founding in 1980, it has grown to include two credit unions, a loan fund, and a research and policy development group that supports those outside of the economic mainstream. Specifically, we: * Help borrowers build wealth by providing fair and responsible mortgages and small business loans in North Carolina, California and other parts of the nation. * Strengthen under-served communities by financing affordable housing, childcare centers, public charter schools, faith-based organizations, and community-focused commercial real estate projects. * Research and report on financial markets to support policies and industry practices that lower the cost of poverty and promote ownership.
Aspire Federal Credit Union, originally known as FAA Eastern Region Federal Credit Union, was founded in 1948 to serve a small group of Civil Aeronautics Administration employees (currently the Federal Aviation Administration). Our Credit Union has come a long way since those humble beginnings, which included seven people who pooled together shares of $5.00 each to initiate the original charter. Today, Aspire FCU is a $180 million dollar credit union, serving approximately 22,000 members within many diverse employee groups throughout the northeastern United States. Aspire FCU is a not-for-profit financial cooperative, which means all earnings at the end of the year are returned to our members in the form of better, low-cost financial services. The decision to change our name to Aspire Federal Credit Union was made because we serve more than just the employees of the Federal Aviation Administration. The name Aspire means to “soar,” which is a reflection of our heritage, while at the same time represents our members’ dreams and aspirations. As our tag line states: “Your Dream. Our Purpose.” The employees at Aspire FCU are dedicated to helping make your financial goals and dreams a reality. The cornerstone of our existence continues to be our “member first” philosophy. BMI Federal Credit Union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative owned by its members. Originally established in 1936 to serve the employees of Battelle Memorial Institute, BMI FCU is now open to everyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in Franklin, Licking, Fairfield, Pickaway, Madison, Union, Delaware or Morrow County. Selected in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 as the #1 Credit Union in Central Ohio by the readers of Columbus CEO magazine. BMI FCU was also selected as a Reader`s Choice winner by readers of This Week Newspapers.
Altana is a Montana financial cooperative, where citizens save together and pool their resources to provide loans that have built homes, purchased equipment for farmers, or financed someone's first car. The members of Altana help each other, while helping themselves. Altana Federal Credit Union (then Laurel Federal Credit Union) started in 1949 out of an empty railcar in Laurel, Montana. Several railroad workers joined together and started the credit union as a way to safeguard themselves from the high cost of banking services. The first loan given was to purchase a sewing machine. Altana has grown to offer seven locations, a wide range of products and services and a nationwide free ATM network. Altana serves residents throughout Yellowstone, Carbon, Stillwater, Sweet Grass, Golden Valley, Wheatland and Musselshell counties in Montana.
