About the Person

Otto Berkes is a career technologist with a track record of innovation and engineering excellence. He is consulting while evaluating new opportunities. As HBO’s Chief Technology Officer, Otto was responsible for the company`s technology organization and strategy. During his tenure, he led HBO GO to become one of the most popular streaming services in the U.S. and created a software development center in Seattle to support the rapid growth of the HBO GO service. Previously, he was at Microsoft for 18 years where he made significant contributions to Windows, Xbox, and mobile device efforts. Otto joined Microsoft in 1993 as a senior software developer to work on the graphics engine for the Windows NT operating system, and subsequently re-wrote Microsoft`s OpenGL implementation using optimized C and assembly language. He led Microsoft`s OpenGL and DirectX graphics development groups in Windows and helped drive the adoption of GPU-accelerated computer graphics, a technology now ubiquitous in PCs and consumer devices. Otto is one of the four original founders of Xbox, and led its technical direction as Xbox`s first architect. An early champion of mobile computing, he led the development of touch-based technologies, user interfaces, hardware architectures, and physical designs that were the forerunners to today`s tablets. He is co-inventor on nine patents focused on mobile device interaction and technologies. Otto was at Autodesk before joining Microsoft where he wrote the graphics engine and user interface for the first Windows-based version of AutoCAD.
