A123 Systems is a leading developer and manufacturer of advanced lithium ion batteries and energy storage systems for transportation, electric grid, government and a variety of commercial applications. A123 leverages breakthrough technology, high-quality manufacturing and expert systems integration capabilities to deliver innovative solutions that enable customers to bring next-generation products to market. Our proprietary Nanophosphate® technology is built on materials initially developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and our products are designed to deliver long life, excellent safety, and high performance. As our customers continue to tell us, we have one of the best lithium ion battery technologies on the market. In the transportation market, our list of customers include General Motors, BMW, Daimler, Fisker Automotive and SAIC, the largest automaker in China. We also make a lithium ion engine starter battery for micro-hybrids, and we are the leading provider of advanced battery systems for the truck and bus segment. We are also the leading supplier of lithium ion energy storage systems, and customers include AES, Southern California Edison and DTE Energy. And our commercial business is growing as well—we have more than 30 different customer programs at various stages of development, collectively representing more than $100 million in customer stated demand for 2013.
Mujeeb Ijaz is the vice president of the Cell Products Group at A123 Systems, helping to lead global product development and advanced manufacturing of the company’s market-leading HEV, PHEV and EV batteries. Mr. Ijaz joined A123 in 2008 when he was responsible for A123’s Automotive Solutions Group, and he also led the expansion of the company’s module and pack production in 2010. Prior to joining A123 Systems in 2008, Mr. Ijaz worked in Ford Motor Company’s electric vehicle programs since 1992, focusing on battery and fuel cell technologies. He has served on the Board of Directors of Advanced Traction Battery Systems, the joint venture company formed in 2009 between A123 and Shanghai Automotive. Mr. Ijaz also holds 26 patents in the field of battery and advanced alternative energy technologies. Mr. Ijaz has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Virginia Tech.
