To manage the health care of our nation`s Veterans, attention is required toward reliability, safety, efficiency and efficacy. The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) is the nation`s largest integrated health care system. VHA has been organized into 21 regional districts that manage care for more than 8.3 million Veterans in 153 Medical centers and more than 1,400 Primary Outpatient Clinics, also known as Community Based Outpatient Clinics, community living centers and Domiciliaries. The VA Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6) is one of the 21 Veterans Integrated Service Networks (VISNs). VISN 6 is comprised of eight VA Medical Centers and 33 associated community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs) spanning North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia (see map). The network utilizes more than 13,500 clinical and support staff members, and about 4,000 volunteers to serve greater than 340,000 Veterans annually across our three-state service area. In recent years the Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network has been rated among the best Networks in VA on clinical quality performance measures. This recognition is a tribute to our staff and a confirmation for our patients that they are receiving the very best in quality health care. This area is already one of the fastest-growing, most densely Veteran-centric populations in the nation. As the size and density of the Veteran population in the region increases, VISN 6 also reacts to improve access to care. Over the next two years, VISN 6 will expand outpatient services to Veterans in the Charlotte, Winston-Salem, and Fayetteville, NC areas with the development of Health Care Centers in those communities, and a large Primary Outpatient Clinic in Wilmington. Maintaining quality standards, improving access to care, and enhancing patient satisfaction are core goals for VISN 6. The MITRE Corporation is a not-for-profit organization that provides systems engineering, research and development, and information technology support to the government. It operates federally funded research and development centers for the Department of Defense, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Internal Revenue Service and Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Homeland Security, the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. The history of Arkansas began millennia ago when humans first crossed into North America. Many tribes used Arkansas as their hunting lands but the main tribe was the Quapaw who settled in Arkansas River delta upon moving south from Illinois. Early French explorers gave the territory its name, a corruption of Akansea, which is a phonetic spelling of the Illinois word for the Quapaw.[1] This phonetic heritage explains why "Arkansas" is pronounced so differently than "Kansas" even though they share the same spelling.[2] What began as a rough wilderness inhabited by trappers and hunters became incorporated into the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and became Arkansas Territory in 1819. Upon gaining statehood in 1836, Arkansas had begun to prosper under a plantation economy that was heavily reliant on slave labor. After the Civil War Arkansas was a poor rural state based on cotton. Prosperity returned in the 1940s. The state became famous for its political leadership, including President Bill Clinton (Governor, 1979−81 and 1983−92), and as the base for the Walmart corporation.
The North Carolina Department of Commerce is the states lead agency for economic, community and workforce development. Taking a comprehensive approach to economic development, the Departments work reaches many areas. The Department helps people find jobs and employers find and retain a qualified workforce. The Department administers the states employment security system, supporting workers during career transitions. The Department provides local communities with grants and planning services to spur infrastructure development and economic growth, and administers the states economic incentive programs. The Department is also responsible for recruiting companies to the state, helping existing North Carolina companies expand, encouraging business start-ups, enabling companies to export, and marketing North Carolina as a business and visitor destination. In October 2014, the Department entered a contract with a new public-private organization, the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina (EDPNC) to take the lead in these recruiting and marketing functions.
