Washington, DC-based Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology has Appointed Michael James McCoy as Chief Health Information Officer
The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) is the lead agency charged with formulating the federal government’s health IT strategy and coordinating federal health IT policies, standards, programs, and investments. ONC is organizationally located within the Office of the Secretary for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The position of National Coordinator was created in 2004, through an Executive Order, and legislatively mandated in the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH Act) of 2009.
Michael James McCoy is the Chief Health Information Officer (CHIO) in the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), which is is at the forefront of the nation’s health IT efforts to adopt and meaningfully use health information technology and collectively achieve health information technology interoperability as a foundational element of better health for everyone in America. Dr. McCoy is a board certified obstetrician/gynecologist who practiced clinically for more than 20 years, and has over a decade of experience in health information technology, with special interests in interoperability, user experience, and person-centered care. Dr. McCoy’s background includes leadership roles in nearly all facets of the health IT domain – from use in small physician offices to large national health delivery systems, IT development and standards development organizations. Dr. McCoy has been involved with standards development for well over a decade, including Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) Patient Care Coordination domain, and the IHE International Board of Directors. He represented The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) as its health information technology strategist in multiple SDO forums, has worked with the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT) as co-chair of the Women’s Health Work Group, and participated on the Child Health Expert Panel and the Ambulatory Work Group. He served in executive roles for enterprise and ambulatory EHR vendors. A Senior Fellow of the Health Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), Dr. McCoy is on the Physician Committee, liaison to the Public Policy Committee, and previously served on the HIMSS EHR Vendors Association Board. Dr. McCoy served as the first system-level Chief Medical Information Officer for a large, national faith-based Integrated Delivery System. Dr. McCoy is passionate in his quest to help enable a level of healthcare IT-enabled, data driven, interoperable, and person-centered quality care that will facilitate improving the health of this nation’s citizens. Dr. McCoy received his B.S. in biology, magna cum laude, from Georgia State University and his M.D. from the Medical College of Georgia.
