Washington, DC-based US Department of Labor has Appointed Michael Kerr as Chief Information Officer

 

About the Company

The Department of Labor fosters and promotes the welfare of the job seekers, wage earners, and retirees of the United States by improving their working conditions, advancing their opportunities for profitable employment, protecting their retirement and health care benefits, helping employers find workers, strengthening free collective bargaining, and tracking changes in employment, prices, and other national economic measurements. In carrying out this mission, the Department administers a variety of Federal labor laws including those that guarantee workers` rights to safe and healthful working conditions; a minimum hourly wage and overtime pay; freedom from employment discrimination; unemployment insurance; and other income support.

 

About the Person

Prior to joining President Obama’s Administration, he was the Assistant to the Secretary-Treasurer at the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and was in charge of finance and administration. In the early seventies, Kerr moved to Washington, DC to do political and legislative work for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). During the Clinton Administration he worked for both Secretaries Reich and Herman at the Department of Labor, overseeing various agencies and ultimately serving as Wage and Hour Administrator. After graduating from college, Kerr spent two and a half years in community organizing as a VISTA (Volunteer in Service to America). He has a BA from Tufts University and a Masters in City Planning from MIT.
