About the Company

At Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, home to three Nobel laureates, interdisciplinary teams of world-renowned scientists seek new and innovative ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases. Fred Hutch`s pioneering work in bone marrow transplantation led to the development of immunotherapy, which harnesses the power of the immune system to treat cancer with minimal side effects. An independent, nonprofit research institute based in Seattle, Fred Hutch houses the nation`s first and largest cancer prevention research program, as well as the clinical coordinating center of the Women`s Health Initiative and the international headquarters of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network. Private contributions are essential for enabling Fred Hutch scientists to explore novel research opportunities that lead to important medical breakthroughs.

 

About the Person

Matthew Trunnell for more than 15 years has worked at the intersection of information technology and life sciences research in both academic and commercial environments in support of large-scale genomics research. He will be responsible for many key areas at Fred Hutch, including research informatics and enterprise information technology, and he will begin his role Aug. 31.   Trunnell comes to Fred Hutch from Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, where, as chief information officer, he has been responsible for all aspects of information technology and services. During his nine years at Broad Institute, Trunnell managed a 50-fold scale-up of research IT data infrastructure in support of next-generation sequencing and initiated a new organization comprising computational biologists and software engineers focused on developing advanced informatics capabilities.   Trunnell received his bachelor’s degree from Princeton University and his master of science from the University of Washington.
