About the Person

Mark S. Askren became UNL's first Chief Information Officer on Aug. 10, 2009. The Chief Information Officer is a senior member of the administration reporting to Chancellor Perlman. He oversees the central Information Services department, and works with campus instructional, research, outreach, and administrative officers to lead collaborative information technology planning and to facilitate the development of campus computing standards and policies. Askren is responsible for aligning information technology efforts with institutional goals. He also recommends governance processes and performance metrics to ensure that information technology investments deliver value in support of the core campus mission. Askren previously was assistant vice chancellor of administrative computing services at University of California, Irvine. At UC Irvine, Askren led the central organization that provides enterprise systems for the campus and its medical center, and was responsible for campus information technology executive leadership, strategic planning, and enterprise security, in partnership with the Network and Academic Computing Services organization. His previous positions include assistant vice president, application development and data management, at the University of Illinois, and assistant dean for information technology for the School of Medicine at the University of California San Diego. He has an MBA in business economics and public policy from Indiana University, and a bachelor's in business from Florida State University.
