Established in 1758, Halifax County is in northeastern/north-central North Carolina approximately eight miles from the Virginia border. Located in the Roanoke River and Tar-Pamlico River basins, it is one of the largest geopraphical counties in North Carolina, encompassing an area of approximately 722 square miles with a population of about 55,000 residents. Principle industries include textiles, tourism, industrial and agricultural businesses. Halifax County has a Council/Manager form of government with about 550 full-time employees in 19 departments and an operating budget of over $37 million. During its more than 240 years of existence, Halifax County has become a premier location for its quality of life and convenient access to a variety of recreational activities. The Municipal District includes the hamlets of Little Smoky, Ridgevalley, DeBolt, Landry Heights and Grovedale. Our borders encompass the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation and the towns of Fox Creek, Grande Cache and Valleyview, while Grande Prairie is our neighbour to the west. Serviced by Highways 40, 43 and 49, railways and a major airport in Grande Prairie, transportation is convenient and efficient. Agriculture, forestry, oil and gas, coal and tourism are all mainstays of both the local and provincial economy.
The government of Knox County, Tennessee operates under a home rule format. The county administrator, formerly known as the County Executive, is called the County Mayor. There is also an elected County Commission. The county officials districts do not correspond with those of the city of Knoxville, which has its own mayor and city council. Residents of the county living within Knoxville city limits vote in both city and county elections, are represented by city and county mayors, and pay city and county taxes. While the administration appears to be duplicated, services tend to be separated. Knox County runs the local school system, health department and library branches. Knoxville maintains police department independent of the County Sheriff. Other Knox County elected offices include the Property Assessor, County Clerk, Register of Deeds, Trustee, District Attorney General, Law Director, Public Defender and court clerks.
