The University of Michigan is a top research university known for research spending, interdisciplinary programs, international outreach, athletics and academic excellence. The university has its main campus in Ann Arbor as well as the University of Michigan-Dearborn and University of Michigan-Flint.
Laura McCain Patterson is the Chief Information Officer for the University of Michigan and Associate Vice President for Information and Technology Services. Appointed to the role in March 2009, Laura is responsible for working with the campus community to develop the strategy for leveraging information technology to advance the goals of the university's three campuses and health system. Her charge also includes direct responsibility for shared infrastructure, communication systems, data centers, administrative information systems, academic technologies and IT security. Laura joined the university in 1993 as the University Registrar. In 1996, she assumed responsibility for the M-Pathways project, which included the implementation of multiple enterprise-wide resource planning systems across the university's core business areas. Prior to joining U-M, Laura was Registrar at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire from 1982 to 1993. The former Franklin College of Indiana faculty member started her information technology career when she was appointed as Registrar and Director of Academic Advising at Franklin College of Indiana in 1982. Laura has many publications and has made numerous presentations at professional associations of student service providers, information technology professionals, and user groups. She is a Computerworld Smithsonian Award Laureate; was named a Top Michigan Woman in Computing in 2005; served as an EDUCAUSE Leadership Institute Faculty Member from 2010 to 2013; and was recognized with Government Technology's Top 25 Doers, Dreamers and Drivers award in 2014 and the Center for Digital Education’s Top 30 Technologists, Transformers and Trailblazers across America award in 2014. Laura holds bachelors and masters degrees from Indiana University and completed graduate work in human learning and instructional design at the University of Minnesota. She and her husband, Rex, have three children. She is an avid runner and cyclist.
