Washington, DC-based National Aeronautics and Space Administration has Promoted Larry Sweet as Chief Information Officer
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is an agency of the United States government, responsible for the nation`s public space program. NASA was established on July 29, 1958, by the National Aeronautics and Space Act. In addition to the space program, it is also responsible for long-term civilian and military aerospace research. Since February 2006 NASA`s self-described mission statement is to "pioneer the future in space exploration, scientific discovery, and aeronautics research
Larry Sweet earned a B.A. in 1978 from Texas Lutheran University and began his NASA career at the Johnson Space Center in 1987 where he served as supervisor and manager for 25 years. Throughout his career at NASA, he held positions as branch chief in the Center Operations Directorate, and office manager and division chief in the Information Resources Directorate. Sweet completed a detail in 2002 as deputy director in the Public Affairs Office and an assignment in 2005 at NASA Headquarters, Washington D.C. In 2005, he was selected as deputy director for the Information Resources Directorate, and was then named director, information resources and JSC CIO in 2007. Sweet is currently responsible for developing and implementing the center's strategy for institutional information systems in accordance with agency and center policies and standards. The Information Resources Directorate provides a broad range of information technology and services to the Johnson Space Center including institutional computer and telecommunications networks and data center systems; mission imagery acquisition and distribution; production and distribution of scientific, technical, administrative information; development and implementation of automated systems for processing, storing, and retrieving research and administrative information; and information management services including records management and Privacy Act programs.
