About the Person
Joanna Young is the University of New Hampshire's Chief Information Officer. Her information technology career includes a decade in executive roles in property & casualty and higher education. Ms. Young's experience includes applications development, infrastructure management, telecommunications, program office management, and mergers & acquisitions, both domestically and internationally. She has been accountable for internally and externally managed and hosted application and infrastructure services. She is experienced with and has prudently applied many business and information technology practices, ranging from Project Management Book of Knowledge (PMBOK), COBIT, ITIL, and Six Sigma. As CIO for University of New Hampshire, Ms. Young is accountable for applications and infrastructure supporting all university functions, including learning management systems, distance learning, student and advancement systems, university system enterprise services, networks, servers and data centers. Current priorities include academic, advancement and research projects, cyberinfrastructure, virtualization, project management practice implementation, increase in revenue through grant funding and market expansion, design of technology-enabled academic and conference facilities, and expansion of cyberinfrastructure at UNH and throughout New Hampshire. Ms. Young is the Executive Sponsor of New Hampshire's Broadband Technology Opportunities Program, which has received $44.5M in ARRA funding to expand and upgrade New Hampshire's broadband infrastructure, including wired and wireless cyberinfrastructure. Ms. Young believes delivery of quality, appropriate, reliable and affordable technology services is the key attribute of a high performing information technology department. Prioritizing technology investments according to the value of the organization and making and meeting the right commitments for constituents is paramount. Technology professionals must understand the business in which they operate, know their technology craft, and put customer delivery above all else. Ms. Young's prior CIO assignment was at Liberty Mutual Group, where she was accountable for information technology supporting all corporate functions, including Legal, Financial, Compliance and Human Resources. She was also accountable for shared services, including business-to-business, content & document management and enterprise development services, including oversight of domestic and international development services. Other leadership roles included executive leadership of technology support and end-user computing. Ms. Young is a regular contributor and speaker at undergraduate and graduate classes, and at various industry forums. Her favorite quote is "The end crowneth the work," attributed to Queen Elizabeth I of England. In her spare time, she can be found with her family, running or working on a novel.
