About the Person
Joan Hicks is responsible for Health System Information Services which provides IT services for the University Hospital, UAB Highlands Hospital, Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital, The Kirklin Clinic and Health Centers and Health Information Management for University Hospital and UAB Highlands Hospital. Joan has been recognized as a national leader in HIM. She was awarded AHIMA’s Motivator Award for 1999 and the CFN Project received AHIMA’s Best Practices Award for 2000. She has continued to demonstrate her commitment to UAB and UABHS through teaching in the Master of Science in Health Informatics Program and the Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management Program in the School of Health Related Professions. She received the Outstanding Graduate Award from the Health Information Management Program. This award was presented one time during the first twenty five years of the School of Health Related Professions. She also received the Outstanding Preceptor Award from the Health Information Management Program. Prior to joining HSIS, Joan was the Director of Medical Information Services for Children’s Health System where she had joint responsibilities for traditional HIM operations (record processing, ROI, information security, data integrity, chart completion, ICD 9 CM and CPT coding, JCAHO IM standards) and Project Manager for installation of LinkSoft Application, 3M Encoder Application and SoftMed ChartFact, ChartStat and ChartScript products. Joan was a fulltime member of the faculty for the HIM Program at UAB for seven years. Also in addition to traditional HIM operations, she has managed Risk Management, Medical Staff Services, Social Services, Utilization Review, Medical Library services, JCAHO Hospital-wide, Quality Improvement and Discharge Planning. Joan graduated with a BS in Medical Record Administration from UAB where she also earned a certificate in Medical Record Technology. She earned a Master of Science degree in Health Informatics from UAB. Joan is an assistant professor at UAB’s School of Health Related Professions Health Informatics Program and is committed to education, research and using effective IM to improve the care delivery process.
