Detroit, MI-based Wayne State University has Promoted Joan Dunbar as Associate Vice President of Technology Commercialization
A premier research university serving a diverse body of motivated students in vibrant Midtown, the cultural center of Detroit. Founded in 1868, Wayne State University is a nationally recognized metropolitan research institution offering more than 370 academic programs through 13 schools and colleges to nearly 29,000 students. Wayne State`s main campus in Midtown Detroit comprises 100 buildings over 200 acres; its six extension centers offer higher education to students throughout Southeast Michigan.
Joan Dunbar, PhD, is the Director of Biotechnology Development and Biomedical Innovation at WSU School of Medicine. She received her PhD from the University of Sydney and undertook postdoctoral studies at the Carlsberg Research Center, Copenhagen, Denmark and the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Dunbar’s scientific expertise is in protein structure-function and macromolecular recognition.
In 1987 she joined the faculty in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at the WSU School of Medicine and has been federally funded for research on protein-DNA interactions and gene regulation. In 2000 Dr. Dunbar established the Office of Biotechnology Development at the School of Medicine to facilitate translational research by promoting research, development and academic-industry partnerships to support the translation and commercialization of biomedical technologies. On behalf of the faculty, Dr. Dunbar has secured funding for technology validation studies and assisted the faculty in successful submission of proposals for state and federal funding for technology development and commercialization. Dr. Dunbar also established new graduate course in the Business of Biotechnology. With a background in both research and the translation of innovation, Dr. Dunbar will serve as the Director of the subcommittee on Partnerships in Innovation and will also serve as an interface to the relevant committees representing Pilot and Collaborative Studies and Novel Methodologies
