About the Person

James F. Cariello, Chief Technology Officer at DigitalOcean, has over two decades of experience in programming and network infrastructure. Recently transitioning from Google, James will play an integral role in helping DigitalOcean expand their product portfolio with highly-scalable distributed systems. James’ career started at a young age. He began coding at age 9 on an Atari 800, where he taught himself Basic to hack the source code and grant himself more lives in video games. He joined Physicians’ Online as a web programmer in 1996 before moving to Random House for a more senior position. With e-commerce being a relatively new medium, James led the charge introducing the company to the world of selling their books online directly to customers. As a non-technical company, James was the liaison for all departments interested in web development, while simultaneously managing the major applications on the website. James returned to the startup world in 2000, initially joining a VOIP/telephony startup. It wasn’t long before his managerial skillset led him to Bloomberg, where he represented engineers and advocated for best software engineering practices in a finance-based environment. But ultimately James wanted to return to a company with an engineering-driven culture and focus. That need led him to join Google as a Technical Lead/Manager in network infrastructure in 2010, centering his attention on a proprietary Pub/Sub messaging bus that today is ubiquitous throughout the company. At DigitalOcean, James is responsible for leading the engineering team comprised of Software, Site Reliability, Network, Platform, and Security Engineers.
