About the Person

Fred Estrella, chief information technology officer, will retire from Northern Arizona University at the end of June after more than 16 years of service to the university. Fred Estrella, Northern Arizona UniversityFred Estrella became Northern Arizona University`s first chief information technology officer on June 21, 1999.Estrella reports directly to the university president and is a member of the President`s Cabinet and the NAU Strategic Planning Council.He also serves on a variety of academic and administrative IT committees throughout the campus.Since his arrival, Estrella has overseen a variety of IT projects, including the conversion of the university`s human resource, financial, and student information systems, as well as the development of the first e-business solution for the campus. Prior to assuming his duties at NAU, Estrella enjoyed a highly successful 28 year career in the U.S. Army`s Signal Corps.The retired Colonel served in all levels of signal command positions from Platoon Leader through Brigade Commander, his last position being Commander of the United States Army Information Systems Engineering Command at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. Estrella earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY.He has two master`s degrees: one, a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado, Boulder, CO, and the other, a master of science in National Security Strategy from the National War College, Washington, D.C.Estrella also served as an Associate Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department, United States Military Academy, for three years.
