The Baltimore City Health Department is the oldest, continuously-operating health department in the United States, formed in 1793, when the governor appointed the city`s first health officers in response to a yellow fever outbreak in the Fells Point neighborhood. Franklin County was separated from St. Louis County and established in 1818, and is named after founding father, Benjamin Franklin. The county seat was originally in the village of Newport, but was permanently moved to the City of Union in 1825.
