Salt Lake City-based University of Utah has appointed Eric Denna as Chief Information Officer.

 

About the Company

University of Utah is the state’s oldest and largest institution of higher education and is a major research university. The U offers over 100 undergraduate and more than 90 graduate degree programs to over 28,000 students. The University of Utah is one of the state’s largest employers and is ranked as one of the top public research universities in the nation. In 2002 the University of Utah hosted the Olympic Village as well as Winter Olympic events, including the opening and closing ceremonies.

 

About the Person

After completing a bachelor degree in accounting and a master degree in information systems at Brigham Young University (BYU), Eric began his professional career as an EDP auditor and consultant to Ernst & Whinney. He began his education career teaching at Michigan State University as the Coopers & Lybrand Doctoral Scholar while pursuing a Ph.D in Information Systems. After completing his Ph.D., he worked for Coopers & Lybrand in their artificial intelligence practice in New York City in 1987. While there he worked on several efforts developing and applying artificial intelligence technology to a variety of business problems for a wide range of domestic and international clients. In 1988, Eric joined the faculty of Brigham Young University's School of Accountancy. In 1991, he was awarded the university's William C. Brown Teaching Excellence Award for his innovation in the classroom. He has lectured at several universities including as a visiting professor at Moscow State University in Moscow, Russia in 1992. He has been a popular speaker at conferences, symposia, and seminars throughout the world. Eric has worked as a consultant to several organizations helping them develop and implement innovative business, information, and decision processes. Some of Eric's consulting clients included IBM, Price Waterhouse, Sears, Geneva Steel, Scott Paper, the State of Washington, Times Mirror, Utah Technology Finance Corporation, Novell, the State of Michigan, and Farm Management Corporation. He is also a member of Patty Seybold's Pioneer Group, a technology think tank in Boston. Eric is also a member of the Research Board, a select group of 109 CIO’s at large multi-national organizations. Eric has written several books and articles on a variety of topics. He is the lead author of the professional book Event-Driven Business Solutions: Today's Revolution in Business and Information Technology and a founding-author of the college textbook Accounting, Information Technology, and Business Solutions. He has also written several articles describing technology-enabled innovations in business, information, and decision processes. Eric is known as one who challenges traditional thinking about how organizations work and how they use information technology.
