About the Person
Daniel Drawbaugh, senior vice president and chief information officer at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, is a nationally recognized pioneer in developing and adopting technology to improve the quality, safety and efficiency of health care. Mr. Drawbaugh was named CIO of the health system in 1996. Under his leadership, UPMC has signed trail-blazing agreements with such vendors as IBM, Alcatel-Lucent and dbMotion that will transform computing and communications at UPMC to better serve patients and clinicians. UPMC also has invested more than $1 billion in information technology over the past five years, including the development of one of the industry’s most extensive systems for collecting and exchanging electronic medical records (EMRs) across all care settings, from hospitals and laboratories to physicians’ offices and long-term care facilities. In 2006, InformationWeek magazine selected Mr. Drawbaugh from among information technology leaders in all industries as “Chief of the Year” for his aggressive development and use of technology to address cost and quality problems in health care. With nearly 1,200 IT professionals, UPMC also has been consistently recognized by the magazine as one of the 100 most innovative users of information technology. A graduate of Temple University with a bachelor's degree in biomedical and electrical engineering, Mr. Drawbaugh was recruited as director of biomedical engineering for Shadyside Hospital (now UPMC Shadyside) in 1983. He was named the hospital’s chief information officer in 1990 and joined UPMC when it acquired Shadyside six years later. He holds a master's degree in business administration from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.
