The primary goal of the Division of Family & Children Services (DFCS) is to assist and support families to ensure children are safe from abuse, and families can become more self-sufficient. DFCS is made up of two primary bodies of work: Child Welfare and the Office of Family Independence (OFI). Child Welfare encompasses Child Protective Services (CPS), Adoptions and Foster Care. The Office of Family Independence oversees Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Program (TANF), Food Stamps, Medicaid and other self- sufficiency and family support activities.

Medical facilities within the County include Edgecombe County Health Department, Vidant Edgecombe Hospital, Vidant Multispecialty Clinic, Freedom Hill Health Center, and OIC Medical Center. Within thirty minutes drive is the nationally known East Carolina University Medical Center and Vidant Medical Center. Edgecombe County`s location offers a mild year-round climate with four distinct seasons. After a brief winter snowfall or two, we know that it won`t be long until the Dogwoods begin to bloom. After a few days of hot sunbathing days in summer, we know that the local maple trees will soon begin to show the brilliant colors of fall.
