The mission of the College of Science and Liberal Arts (CSLA) is to address the complexities of modern life at the intersection of science, technology and human values, and to provide the intellectual foundations necessary to understand and analyze them. Founded in 1910 and located in Durham, N.C., North Carolina Central University was the nation`s first publicly supported liberal arts college for African-Americans, and it is one of 17 institutions in the University of North Carolina system. With a student population of more than 8,400, NCCU is a comprehensive university offering baccalaureate, master`s, doctoral and professional degree programs. Today, liberal arts remain a signature program at NCCU, joined by five additional areas of academic emphasis: Education, Nursing, Biosciences, Business and Law. Capitalizing on its location in the heart of North Carolina`s Research Triangle, the university is home to two bioscience research institutes. In keeping with its motto of “Truth and Service,” NCCU in 1995 became the first institution in the UNC System to require community service of all students. North Carolina Central University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate, masters, doctoral and professional degrees.
