Our Mission: To exceed your expectations in our delivery of innovative financial solutions to help you achieve your maximum economic potential. Core Values: Be Great. Be Engaged. Be Open. Be Nice. Our History: In 1958, Chanute Military Credit Union opened its doors on the Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, Illinois to serve military personnel and their families. With the government`s announcement of plans to close the Chanute Air Force Base, plans were made to expand the credit union in order to continue to serve those faithful military members. As a result, the field of membership was expanded and we changed our name to Credit Union 1 in 1982. In 1999, we combined forces with Paysaver Credit Union, headquartered in Lombard, Illinois. Today we serve over 87,000 members throughout the state of Illinois and Indiana, as well as worldwide. Become a Member: Becoming a member at Credit Union 1 is easy! To be eligible for membership in the credit union, you must be an individual or entity qualifying within our field of membership. All it takes is a $5.00 one time membership fee and a $5.00 initial deposit. With your membership, you will have access to all of our products and services. Apply online, call 800.252.6950, or stop by our nearest branch location today. We look forward to serving you! What is a Credit Union? A credit union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative, owned by members like you! Since we`re not in business to make a profit, you benefit with lower loan rates and a higher return on savings.

Self-Help is a family of nonprofit organizations whose mission is to create and protect ownership and economic opportunity for all. Since Self-Help`s founding in 1980, it has grown to include two credit unions, a loan fund, and a research and policy development group that supports those outside of the economic mainstream. Specifically, we: * Help borrowers build wealth by providing fair and responsible mortgages and small business loans in North Carolina, California and other parts of the nation. * Strengthen under-served communities by financing affordable housing, childcare centers, public charter schools, faith-based organizations, and community-focused commercial real estate projects. * Research and report on financial markets to support policies and industry practices that lower the cost of poverty and promote ownership.
Since our founding in 1934, we have been singularly focused on one thing: providing world-class personal service and financial security to our Members. This isn`t just something we say—everything we do, every decision we make, is with an unwavering commitment to serving the best interests of our Members. Although we offer the same products and services as other financial institutions, our structure and culture are vastly different. Banks are for profit, while credit unions are Member-owned financial cooperatives, meaning our excess earnings are returned to our Members in the form of lower rates on loans, higher rates on savings, low-to-no fees, and many complimentary services. We take to heart the “people helping people” philosophy, the principle on which credit unions were founded. Pledging ourselves to this idea not only means our steadfast dedication to Member service, but also actively supporting the communities we serve through events, donations, scholarships, and financial literacy programs. Consumer Reports recently published findings from a study they`ve been conducting since 2012 to rate “key aspects of customer service care” across 22 industries. Credit unions were rated the best industry with a score of 90 out of 100. And, SchoolsFirst FCU ranked the best among all credit unions nationwide. We serve school employees and their families across the state of California. As the largest education-based credit union in the U.S., and the fifth largest credit union by asset size, our financial stability can be attributed to one thing: continually providing our Members with world-class personal service to help them better their financial lives.
