Journal Communications, Inc. (NYSE: JRN), headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is a diversified media company with operations in television and radio broadcasting, publishing and digital media. Journal owns and operates or provides services to 14 television stations and 34 radio stations in 11 states. In addition, Journal publishes the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, which serves as the only major daily newspaper for the metro-Milwaukee area, and several community newspapers in Wisconsin. Growing digital media assets build on Journal`s strong publishing and broadcasting brands.
In 1966, after postgraduate work at the University of Denver, Andy Laird began his broadcast engineering career at Denvers KWGN-TV. In the fall of 1967 he became the Chief Engineer of KLAK AM/FM also in Denver. Andy left Denver in 1972 to become Chief Engineer of KDAY in Los Angeles. In 1987, Heritage Media Corporation acquired KDAY and shortly thereafter, he joined Heritage as Vice President of Engineering, Radio. In 1998, Andy joined Journal Broadcast Group in Milwaukee as Director of Engineering for the Radio Division. In January of 2001, he was promoted to Vice President, Radio Engineering. In 2005 he was promoted to Vice President, Chief Technology Officer adding engineering responsibility for TV and IT. Journal Broadcast Group is a publicly traded company (NYSE, JRN) operating thirty-five radio stations and twelve television stations in medium sized markets. Andy is recognized by the Society of Broadcast Engineers as a Certified Professional Broadcast Engineer. He co-authored the Society of Broadcast Engineers/National Public Radio Technologist Training Manual, has served as an industry volunteer on the NRSC DAB Subcommittee since 1992 and currently co-chairs the the DAB Subcommittee, NRSC. He holds a bachelor’s degree in physics with math and music minors from Principia College.
