We serve a population of approximately 4,000 students in 6 elementary schools for grades K-5, a junior high for grades 6-8, and a high school for grades 9-12. We also operate preschool programs and an alternative high school/adult education center. One of the largest geographic districts in the State of Michigan, Alpena Public Schools covers more than 600 square miles, encompassing all of Alpena County as well as all of Presque Isle Township and a part of Krakow Township in Presque Isle County. Our well-organized fleet of buses transports 80 percent of the student body each day, safely traveling some 825,000 miles per year. Officially established as Michigan`s first county-wide school district in 1963, Alpena Public Schools represents an aggregation of business people, farmers, professionals, service employees, children, parents, retirees, and clergy, all proud of their beautiful, bay-side community.
It is the mission of Cherokee County School District`s Student Health Services to provide comprehensive school health services to Cherokee County. The comprehensive school health services are facilitated and implemented by a school nurse in every school in the district. All of our nurses work toward the promotion and continued improvement of school health services in order to enhance the academic achievement for all students. Nurses employed in our schools are a combination of both Registered Nurses (RN) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN). All of our nurses are experienced, multi-skilled, independent, creative, flexible and most important-care for kids! Several of our school nurses have received national certification in school nursing. School nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well-being, academic success and life-long achievement of students. Our nurses serve as an advocate for a comprehensive school health program to promote the health of our students by providing the following services: • Identification, assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation of student health outcomes • Acute & chronic disease management • Individualized Health Plans (IHP) development for students with complex health needs • Participation in IEP & 504 plans • Pediatric nursing procedures • Medication Administration • Health screenings for health problems and barriers to learning, with referrals to outside resources • Communicable disease management & education • Compliance with state mandated school immunization requirements • Illness, injury assessments and interventions • Case management role with collaboration with families, community resources, teachers, physicians and other support services • Implementation of educational programs, specific to nutrition, healthy life styles and choices Many of our school children have a multiple and often complex health conditions. It is not uncommon for our nurses to care for students with asthma, diabetes, cerebral palsy, seizures, blood disorders, high blood pressure, ADHD, obesity, organ transplant recipients, etc. For any questions or concerns that you may have, please feel free to contact the nurse at your child`s school. The ability to learn is contingent on the health and well-being of the child- for this reason, the primary goal of Cherokee County School District`s nursing services is to maximize EACH child`s health so that they can achieve their academic potential.
