The St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services provides temporary assistance to eligible individuals and families to help them with their basic needs until they can become self-sufficient. Toward that end, we have employment programs and other supportive services such as day care so that people can find and maintain employment. We also administer programs which can assist people with their medical expenses and nutritional needs. In addition, Children`s Services helps families deal with problems so they can stay together and, when necessary, provides foster care. Child Protective Services investigates allegations of abuse and neglect. Child Support assists in collecting financial support from legally responsible relatives.
Canada uses a federal form of democratic government that brings together a number of different political communities under a common government for mutual purposes, and separate regional governments for the particular needs of each region. This form of government takes into account Canada`s geographical realities, the diversity of its cultural communities and its dual legal and linguistic heritage. Canada has three levels of government: federal, provincial and territorial, and municipal (local or regional). Within the federal structure, elected officials – the Cabinet of ministers under the leadership of the Prime Minister – make up the chief decision-making body. The federal government leads the country`s democratic system of governance through consultations with other elected officials, provincial and municipal representatives, and the Canadian public. The principal role of the Canadian government is to ensure and support the country`s economic performance. Its other responsibilities include national defence, interprovincial and international trade and commerce, immigration, banking and the monetary system, criminal law and fisheries. The federal government also oversees such industries as aeronautics, shipping, railways, telecommunications and atomic energy.
The Office of Administration combines and coordinates the central management functions of state government. OA provides services for state agencies and serves as the state`s administrative office. The Commissioner serves as Chief Executive with oversight of the seven divisions: Accounting; Budget and Planning; Facilities Management, Design and Construction; General Services; Information Technology Services; Personnel; and Purchasing. As of July 1, 2014, programs assigned to the Commissioner`s Office include the Office of Equal Opportunity, Children`s Trust Fund, Governor`s Council on Disability, Human Resources, and the Administrative Hearing Commission.
Western Connecticut Council of Governments (WCCOG) is a newly created regional planning organization as of January 1, 2015, which represents eighteen cities and towns in southwestern and western Connecticut. WCCOG was formed out of the merger of the South West Regional Planning Agency (SWRPA) and the Housatonic Valley Council of Elected Officials (HVCEO).
