KATC went on the air in the fall of 1962 as an affiliate of the American Broadcasting Company (ABC), and celebrated its fiftieth anniversary in 2012. StormTeam`s Power Doppler 3000, the most powerful radar on the Gulf Coast, helps keep Acadiana families safe from severe weather. Providing live, real time, information from storm systems it scans the horizon from a 14-foot satellite dish towering over 75-feet in the air and instantly reports back to the StormTeam3 Weather Lab. With the "Safe Families" initiative, KATC-TV3 uses the airwaves to provide important information on subjects like health, crime, consumer protection, and weather safety. KATC-TV joins with local law enforcement agencies, hospitals and other organizations to host annual Safe Families events that heighten public awareness about safety and promote positive interaction with the people we serve. The station has established advisory councils throughout Acadiana parishes, to provide important feedback and oversight. KATC-TV3 is owned by the Evening Post Publishing Company, which also owns television stations in Arizona, Colorado, Kentucky, Montana and Texas, daily and weekly newspapers in South Carolina, North Carolina and Texas, and an English-language daily newspaper in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
