Essentially one business with four divisions, the Port promotes economic development through its business operations and economic development tools, such as its four-county foreign-trade zone. Land and infrastructure improvements are provided to encourage business development, and some areas, such as the Port Plaza, are earmarked for recreation and public access. Since its foundation in 1922, the Port of Olympia has served as an economic catalyst for the Thurston County Port District. It is a municipal corporation, governed by three elected commissioners who set policies and objectives. A community port, it is committed to helping area residents enjoy a special quality of life by promoting a healthy economy and a healthy environment.
