The Senate is comprised of 40 members, with each Senator elected to represent a district consisting of approximately 159,000 people. As required by the Massachusetts Constitution, the Senate meets every 72 hours, year-round in either formal or informal session to consider legislation. The Massachusetts Senate is led by the President of the Senate who is elected by the members of the body at the beginning of each two-year legislative session. The Massachusetts Legislature, known as the General Court, has been meeting since 1713.
Polk County provides a broad range of services including law enforcement, child support collection and child protection, transportation and nutrition programs for senior citizens, maintenance of a 515 mile highway system, provision of public health services including immunization and restaurant inspections, monitoring and safeguarding of the County`s environmental resources, promotion of orderly development through planning and zoning, operation of the county detention center and court system, provision of assistance to veterans, the elderly and disabled, operation of a long-term care and rehabilitation facility, and management of 5 county parks, a recycling center, and 17,144 acres of county forest land. The county does so through the efforts of just over 500 employees organized into 23 departments and funded by a $53 million annual budget. Peacefully rural in nature, the county has no city with a population over 3,000. Polk County was organized in 1853, and over the past decade has been one of the fastest-growing counties in Wisconsin. It has a diverse economy with a mix of agriculture, tour-ism, manufacturing, and services. Its proximity to a large metropolitan area has served to provide a ready market for goods produced here as well as a demand for recreational activities including boating, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, hiking, biking and skiing.
The Treasurer of State serves as the State`s banker and is responsible for an investment portfolio of approximately $9 billion. Every day, our staff accepts deposits, reconciles accounts, prepares statements and answers customers` questions. As the bank for the State, the office provides many of the same services as private banks. On average, the office accepts more than $70 million daily in deposits from various local, state and federal sources, and credits them to the proper accounts. These deposits are made up of electronic funds transfers, checks and cash. We process between 2,000 to 3,000 checks and reconcile over 3,000 accounts daily, representing the funds of nearly 200 state agencies, boards and commissions. The Treasurer is also charged with managing the Arkansas 529 Education Savings Plan, the Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) program for people with disabilities, and serves as Chairman of the Arkansas Financial Education Commission.
