The primary goal of the Division of Family & Children Services (DFCS) is to assist and support families to ensure children are safe from abuse, and families can become more self-sufficient. DFCS is made up of two primary bodies of work: Child Welfare and the Office of Family Independence (OFI). Child Welfare encompasses Child Protective Services (CPS), Adoptions and Foster Care. The Office of Family Independence oversees Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Program (TANF), Food Stamps, Medicaid and other self- sufficiency and family support activities.

The Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice, created in 1957 by the enactment of the Civil Rights Act of 1957, works to uphold the civil and constitutional rights of all persons in the United States, particularly some of the most vulnerable members of our society. The Division enforces federal statutes prohibiting discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex (including pregnancy, sexual orientation, and gender identity), disability, religion, familial status, national origin, and citizenship status. Since its establishment, the Division has grown dramatically in both size and scope, and has played a role in many of the nation`s pivotal civil rights battles.
