As the National Governing Body for the sport of swimming in the United States, USA Swimming is a 400,000-member service organization that promotes the culture of swimming by creating opportunities for swimmers and coaches of all backgrounds to participate and advance in the sport through clubs, events and education. Our membership is comprised of swimmers from the age group level to the Olympic Team, as well as coaches and volunteers. Members can get involved through our more than 2,800 clubs across the nation. The University of Michigan has a rich and storied athletics tradition. Intercollegiate competition officially began in 1865-66 when the baseball team won its first three contests it played that season. In 1879, football started its storied tradition. Women`s athletics established formal varsity sports in 1973-74 with U-M fielding basketball, field hockey, swimming and diving, tennis and volleyball teams. Men`s soccer and women`s water polo were added as varsity sports in 2000-01.
