And will make any changes until the dose is appropriate for you. STEP 3: Maintenance Opioid addiction is a chronic disease that requires ongoing monitoring, care, and support. Maintenance can be highly effective if the patient is diligent with appointments and individual/group counseling. The primary benefits of maintenance include significantly decreasing the risk of relapse.
