The University of California, Santa Barbara, commonly known as UCSB or UC Santa Barbara, is a public research university and one of the 10 general campuses of the University of California system. The main campus is located on a 1,022-acre (414 ha) campus in Santa Barbara, California, 100 miles (160 km) northwest of Los Angeles. Founded as an independent teachers` college, UCSB joined the University of California system in 1944 and is the fourth-oldest general-education campus in the system.
With a mission to "Educate Every Child," Dare County`s 11 public schools serve a growing student population approaching 5000. Since 2003, the district has increase facilities by 44% through new construction and by additions/major renovations - four new schools have been added to the system. DCS has a thriving professional climate in which the numbers of Nationally Board Certified teachers (currently 62) is steadily increasing and approximately 1/3 of our teachers have earned advanced degrees. Each Dare County school has received accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Westchester Community College was founded in 1946 as the New York State Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences in White Plains. In 1957, the County of Westchester bought the 360-acre John Hartford estate in Valhalla and designated 218 acres for the community college.
