BASIS was founded on the belief that every child deserves an opportunity to excel academically, and that every child can. We believe the classroom is sacrosanct, and the student-teacher interaction the essential educational activity. We believe in a rigorous, accelerated curriculum, student accountability at all levels, and teachers who are experts in their subject matter, and passionate about teaching it. We believe in instilling in our students a life-long love of knowledge, for its own sake. The overwhelming success and recognition of the first two BASIS Schools in Tucson and Scottsdale demonstrates that these principles, combined with hard work and persistence, could help revolutionize American education. BASIS students are not selected in a demanding admissions process, unlike elite public magnet, fine independent and top-performing international schools to which we are compared. They become BASIS students in the classrooms, inspired by great teachers and greater expectations for what they can achieve. BASIS.ed now manages 12 BASIS Charter schools, expanding from Arizona to Texas and the District of Columbia. The Battle Ground School District in northeast Clark County, Washington, has 19 schools spread over 273 square miles. It stretches from the lowlands of suburban Vancouver on the west, near the confluence of Interstate 5 and Interstate 205, to the Cascade Mountains at the Clark-Skamania county line on the east. Volcanic Mount St. Helens, which erupted with a vengeance in 1980 and looms above the Southwest Washington landscape, is just 10 miles outside of the district`s northeast boundary. The district celebrated its Centennial in 2009-2010. A hundred years earlier, during the presidency of William Howard Taft, two one-school districts – Maple Grove and Dublin – merged and consolidated into what is today the Battle Ground district. During the first six and a half decades, 54 small, rural districts were folded into it, the last one – Yacolt -- in 1975. Today, Battle Ground Public Schools serve approximately 13,000 students.
