We are one of the nation`s first health departments and trace our roots back to 1799, when Paul Revere was named Boston`s first health officer. Back then, the board of health was formed to fight a potential outbreak of cholera. Taking innovative strides to save lives, health officials posted signs on lampposts, held meetings and led an early-day public information campaign to reduce deaths due to cholera, a highly preventable disease. Two hundred years later, that tradition of prevention continues through the Boston Public Health Commission. While we are the country`s oldest health department, we pride ourselves on having some of the most innovative services for our residents. Described as "the most activist arm of city government," by the Boston Globe, the Commission has a vigorous commitment to the health of Boston.
Dungarvin is a national organization of privately owned companies that are dedicated to providing high quality, community-based supports to people with varying support needs. Founded in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1976, Dungarvin has grown to employ approximately 3,500 people who currently provide supports to over 3,200 individuals across 13 states. We believe all persons faced with the challenges of a disability have the same rights and the same basic needs as do other citizens without disabilities. Dungarvin`s mission and values apply to every person we serve, including those with significant behavioral, medical and physical challenges. We are committed to principles of self-determination, self-actualization, and to the preservation of dignity of each person we serve, regardless of the nature or degree of their needs. Dungarvin`s mission is respecting and responding to the choices of people in need of supports. Dungarvin provides a variety of individually tailored services and supports including supported living, day services, supported employment, case management, supported foster care, children`s services, respite care, elder care, host homes and supports for persons with traumatic brain injury and mental health needs in several states.
The N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is the lead stewardship agency for the preservation and protection of North Carolina's outstanding natural resources. The organization, which has offices from the mountains to the coast, administers regulatory programs designed to protect air quality, water quality, and the public's health. DENR also offers technical assistance to businesses, farmers, local governments, and the public and encourages responsible behavior with respect to the environment through education programs provided at DENR facilities and through the state's school system. Through its natural resource divisions, DENR works to protect fish, wildlife and wilderness areas. The agency's activities range from helping to make sure drinking water is safe to managing state parks and forests for safe and enjoyable outdoor recreation experiences.
